Charlie Payton awarded Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Scholarship
Thursday 4 August 2005
When Football Federation Victoria (FFV) coach Charlie Payton heard the news that he had been awarded the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Scholarship he was overwhelmed. “I was absolutely elated,” said Payton, acknowledging it as the greatest personal achievement in his life.
Governor General John Landy presented Payton with the award at a special function held at Government house last Friday. Payton who is in charge of the FFV’s Academy Program in Ballarat and also coaches the Ballarat and District Women’s football team was chosen over 230 applicants to receive the prestigious award.
“John Landy presented us with the award at Government house and after that they spoiled us with an evening I will never forget,” said Payton.
The Winston Churchill Scholarship will now enable Payton to travel and research coaching methods and administration for sports players with physical and intellectual disabilities. Payton will travel to the UK, Ireland and Germany to gather information that he will be able to apply in Victoria.
“That study that I’m doing involves going to places where the methods of coaching people with disabilities is more advanced. I plan to gather information about what works and what doesn’t and bring it back here,” said Payton.
The Churchill Trust is an Australian Trust Fund established in 1965, the year in which former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill died. The principal object of the Trust is to perpetuate and honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill by the award of Travelling Fellowships known as Churchill Fellowships.
Payton has found the award to be quite the door opener and claims that it is everything he expected and a lot more.
“From airfares to spending money everything is taken care of to the point where somebody from Qantas rang and just asked me what country I wanted to be in and when. It’s incredible,” said Payton.
Payton’s original plans included visits to the FA in London, Fulham FC, Bristol Rovers FC, The Scottish FA, The Irish FA and German giants Bayern Leverkusen. However after receiving the award Payton has received offers from other famous clubs asking him to stop and visit.
“Tottenham actually rang me and invited me to visit them while I am in England. I don’t even know how they heard about me or my research plans,” said Payton.
Payton departs for Europe on Saturday, 1 October. FFV wishes Charlie Payton an excellent trip and hopes he enjoys his time abroad.
